INFORMATION AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

 Christmas Break Schedule

As was communicated in a previous email, the return to school date of January 2 has been changed to January 3.

Monday, January 2, is a federal holiday because New Year’s Day falls on Sunday, January 1.  As a result, we recognize that the vast majority of families will have the day off.

We join several Archdiocesan schools in this calendar adjustment reflecting the federal holiday.

The school will be closed and there will be no Extended Care.

Please enjoy the extra day with your families! See you all on Tuesday, January 3!

SJS Speech Success!

The SJS speech team competed in the Blanchet Speech Tournament on Saturday, December 10.  Congratulations are in order for all who participated. Special congratulations go to Phoebe S. and Naomi S. who received Honorable Mention in the top 6 for the Senior Duo Humorous Interpretation of “Joyful Noise,” a celebration of various insects. Congratulations to Sammy S. who placed 4th in the Senior Dramatic Interpretation category for “Bullied…Botched.” Finally, to Phoebe S. who was awarded the Inspirational Speaker for the SJS team.  Many thanks to all of the parents and families for their support of the team during the day of the competition!

Advent Giving

Thank you to all the families that have given so generously during our Advent Giving event. The Issaquah campus collected items for Eastside Baby Corner and tent city.

The Snoqualmie campus donated $500.00 in gift cards to Encompass. The Encompass mission is to partner with families to build healthy foundations for children What a great success!

SJS Middle School Play

The SJS Middle School play auditions and rehearsals for Stuart Little start the first week of January. Pick up an information packet and get ready to audition! Auditions, open to students in sixth to eighth grade, will be held after school on Thursday, January 5 and Friday, January 6, 2017 from 3:00-4:00pm in Mrs. White’s room. The cost to participate in the after school production is $100.00. Rehearsals are Tuesdays and Thursdays after school starting January 10, 2017. Dress rehearsals and the final performance are the week of March 6, 2017!  Contact Mrs. White jwhite@sisissaquah.org for more information. Click here for an information packet. Packets are also available outside Mrs. White’s room.

SJS Middle School Night For Fifth Grade Parents

Please mark your calendars for Thursday, January 12, at 7:00 pm.  The evening will start with a presentation by the middle school. They will provide information on student schedules, core academic subjects, enrichment, extracurricular activities, technology integration (BYOD) and more!  We have a dedicated middle school faculty which embraces our mission to “educate the whole child.” What does that look like in middle school and why is it an advantage for your child to experience an educational environment with that focus during these formative years? Please join us to find out.  We look forward to seeing you there!

Coding With Kids -  Afterschool Program for Grades 1-3

St. Joseph School is offering a Computer Programing Class through the Coding with Kids Company. The class is an afterschool program titled Game Development for Grades 1-3 and will begin January 19. This is a computer programming class where students develop their computational skills and build their own creative programs. This program is offered at several Seattle Archdiocesan schools. The class will take place in the Issaquah computer lab and the class size will be limited to 20 students. Please register online at www.codingwithkids.com/session/2171. We are looking for parent volunteers to assist with supervision during class time. If you are registered in the class, please contact Jackie Olund if you are interested in volunteering with supervision.  The class will be filled on a first come-first served basis. With interest, we’d like to expand to the Snoqualmie campus in the future.

See the flier for grades 1-3 in today’s Thursday folder.

Family Vacations - SJS Handbook

Parents are asked to avoid deviating from the school calendar or daily instructional schedule for the convenience of family vacations. Parents should not plan appointments or vacations during the time students are taking standardized tests. Unscheduled days off from school for family vacations cause students to miss valuable instruction for which teachers are unable to provide a special studies program. Assignments will not be given in anticipation of the vacation, and in addition teachers are not required to give make-up tests or assignments for absences due to vacation. Absences due to family vacation are not considered excused.
