Cold & Flu Season is Here!

Cold and flu season is here and we have a number of students out sick.  Our goal is to keep students and staff at St. Joseph School healthy, so we are sharing the following information:

There has been a rise in the number of cases of flu in King County and neighboring counties.

·     Illness policy for when to have students stay home from school- please note information on the following:

-  Fever- temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. Remember that a child must be fever- free for full 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication such as: Tylenol; Ibuprofen; or other NSAID before returning to school.

-  Infection requiring antibiotics: Sinus Infections; Upper Respiratory Infections; Bronchitis; Strep Throat, Conjunctivitis:    May return to school after a full 24 hours on antibiotics and Fever- Free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication.

-  If your child comes down with a fever of 100˚ or higher, has diarrhea or begins vomiting while at school, you will be contacted to pick your child up.  Please keep all emergency contact information updated.

Policy for having Medications available for students at school:

-  WA State treats prescription and over the counter medications exactly the same.  All medications must be authorized by both a physician and parent.

-  Parents must complete an Authorization for Medication form and submit the form and provide all medications to the health room.

With colds, flu and other illnesses, it is so important to emphasis to cover your nose & mouth when sneezing and coughing and regularly be thoroughly washing hands.

Annual Vision & Hearing Screenings scheduled for January 27, 2017

Washington State requires schools to conduct annual vision & hearing screenings for all students in grades K-3, 5 & 7.  Our screenings are scheduled for the day of January 27, 2017.

If your child is in one of the grades scheduled for screenings and you do not want your child to participate, you may opt out for all or part of the screenings. Please send an email to Roxane at office@sjsissaquah.org indicating your child’s name, homeroom and if you wish to opt out of vision and/or hearing. We must receive your request by the morning of Wednesday, January 25.

Students in grades Pre-K, 4, 6 and 8 are not scheduled to participate in this year’s screenings.

Vision: The vision screening tests the visual acuity or the clearness one sees at a distance of 20 feet. Vision screening will not identify every child who needs eye care, nor will every child identified need glasses or treatment.  After re-screening, any results of 20/40 or greater suggest further testing by your vision practitioner.

Hearing: The hearing screening was performed using an audiometer that provides tonal stimuli of frequencies at 1000, 2000 and 4000 at a hearing level of 20db.  After re-screening, any results where the child fails to hear any of the tonal frequencies suggests further evaluation by a health provider.

Any child who does not meet the baseline screening standards will be automatically re-screened (date TBD).  If after re-screening, any results still have not met the baseline standard, parents will then receive an email with these specific results. Normal results will not result in any parent notification.

Attention Families Preparing for First Holy Communion:

Our February, First Communion Preparation Class will be Thursday, February 2 starting at 6:30pm OR Saturday, February 4 starting at 10:00am.  It is your choice which class you attend.  Remember, both parent and child must be present.  If you have questions, please contact Amy in the parish office at 425-392-5516, ext. 227.

Calling All Table Captains!

The annual St. Joseph School Auction is an awesome event that brings together our school families, parishioners and friends of St. Joseph for an evening of fellowship and fundraising.  This year, we want to make sure as many school families attend as possible. In addition, we want to extend this great event beyond our school families so we can introduce SJS to the broader community and increase our fundraising impact.

We are seeking volunteers to serve as Table Captains.  As a Table Captain, you’d serve as a recruiter and promoter for the auction.  We’d be looking for you to recruit 10 paying attendees to fill a table.  You can recruit your fellow parents, parishioners, family members, and people outside the SJS community.  This is a great event to share with people who might be considering SJS for their children.  Wouldn’t it be great to see a packed house at our auction experiencing the SJS community?

As a thank you for serving as a Table Captain, each Captain will receive:

·      Free valet parking at the auction

·      An extra bottle of wine at the auction dinner

·      Recognition at the auction

·      Good karma for helping promote St. Joseph School to others

So, rally your fellow SJS parents, friends and family and sign up to be a Table Captain!  Please email Megan Michalson (mmichalson@sjsissaquah.org) to sign up.
