INFORMATION AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Annual Vision & Hearing Screenings scheduled for tomorrow, January 27, 2017

Washington State requires schools to conduct annual vision & hearing screenings for all students in grades K-3, 5 & 7.  Our screenings are scheduled for the day of January 27, 2017.

Students in grades Pre-K, 4, 6 and 8 are not scheduled to participate in this year’s screenings.

Vision: The vision screening tests the visual acuity or the clearness one sees at a distance of 20 feet. Vision screening will not identify every child who needs eye care, nor will every child identified need glasses or treatment.  After re-screening, any results of 20/40 or greater suggest further testing by your vision practitioner.

Hearing: The hearing screening was performed using an audiometer that provides tonal stimuli of frequencies at 1000, 2000 and 4000 at a hearing level of 20db.  After re-screening, any results where the child fails to hear any of the tonal frequencies suggests further evaluation by a health provider.

Any child who does not meet the baseline screening standards will be automatically re-screened (date TBD).  If after re-screening, any results still have not met the baseline standard, parents will then receive an email with these specific results. Normal results will not result in any parent notification.

Middle School Progress Reports

Friday, January 27, 2017 marks the middle of the second trimester, and teachers have updated student grades via the PowerSchool Portal. Please log in with your son or daughter and review his/her current grades. This is an important time to look over your child's progress in each class. When you look at your student’s performance in the gradebook portal, you can view both overall grades and individual assignment grades. To view the assignments in a class, click on the letter grade displayed by the class name. Individual assignments and scores sometimes include teacher comments as well. Remember that mid-trimester grades are a snapshot of your student's performance and a forecasting tool for the remainder of the trimester. It is valuable to look for patterns in your child’s performance, set goals and make adjustments. If you have questions about your child's work or classroom performance, talk with him/her about it and encourage your child to talk with the teacher.  Any technical issues logging into the site should be directed to karney@sjsissaquah.org.

Cold & Flu Season is Here!

Cold and flu season is here and we have a number of students out sick.  Our goal is to keep students and staff at St. Joseph School healthy, so we are sharing the following information:

There has been a rise in the number of cases of flu in King County and neighboring counties.

·        Illness policy for when to have students stay home from school- please note information on the following:

-  Fever- temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. Remember that a child must be fever- free for full 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication such as: Tylenol; Ibuprofen; or other NSAID before returning to school.

-  Infection requiring antibiotics: Sinus Infections; Upper Respiratory Infections; Bronchitis; Strep Throat, Conjunctivitis:    May return to school after a full 24 hours on antibiotics and Fever- Free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication.

-  If your child comes down with a fever of 100˚ or higher, has diarrhea or begins vomiting while at school, you will be contacted to pick your child up.  Please keep all emergency contact information updated.

Policy for having Medications available for students at school:

-  WA State treats prescription and over the counter medications exactly the same.  All medications must be authorized by both a physician and parent.

-  Parents must complete an Authorization for Medication form and submit the form and provide all medications to the health room.

With colds, flu and other illnesses, it is so important to emphasis to cover your nose & mouth when sneezing and coughing and regularly be thoroughly washing hands.

St. Joseph Parish Mission 2017

As part of the St. Joseph Parish Mission 2017, Snoqualmie students in grades 4-8 will meet with Chris Padgett for a talk called:  Picked, Prepared, Protected on Monday, February 6.  Topics include: 1) You are being chosen and set up for success as young men and women.  2) Our choices impact ourselves and others.  3) We reach more people then we will ever realize.  4) Let’s make these moments of impact be more positive than negative. 5) It may seem impossible but God has an adventure waiting for us if we’ll just say yes. The archdiocese has made substantial changes to the Safe Environment program last year and it has been working out the glitches over the year. The archdiocese still requires a valid background check every three years, a 3 hour in-person class, and every three years, an on-line course.  The school also requires in-person attendance at a class conducted at school and a signed Confidentiality Form. The school form is on our website.

All background checks and on-line classes go through www.virtusonline.org.  If you have been a volunteer anywhere in the archdiocese previously, you will be in the system. Please contact Roxane Barkley at office@sjsissaquah.org if you need help navigating the system.
